about
I see social interactions as if they were independent characters – like the emotional offspring of two people who try to communicate, like a third party between them. Individual reactions to particular, social situations are most often affected by other people, and in turn, the reactions affect these situations and relationships. In investigating social circumstances through painting, drawing and the occasional theatrical installation, my conclusion is always that a relationship, like a person, has it’s own bizarre natures and imperfections.
All of the stories I investigate are entirely subjective. My curiosity centers around what cannot be clearly explained, and therefore the work often makes references to religious imagery and rituals, since they serve to represent the “un-representable”. My kosher-style childhood home, Quaker education, and Caribbean Baptist/Yoruba-influenced caregivers have all served as influences and have materialized in my pieces.
