My friend Sara Blaylock (sarablaylock.com) has made an incredible research and art project about the hidden history of Barcelona.

The presentation is this sunday at 19h at Miscelanea in the Raval, and she asked me to read! I will be reading in English, Spanish and Catalan about the recently built-up neighborhood but formerly isolated foothill village of Nou Barris.

Below is the information and links to know more! I hope to see you sunday!

Barcelona: A Narrative Atlas

Sara Blaylock’s atlas of Barcelona shares an outsider’s investigation into the hidden histories of the city. American artist Blaylock spent several months researching Barcelona’s ten districts using Catalan, Spanish and English texts. In a series of ten essays (one for each district), she combines her discoveries, drawing connections between places and events through history’s myriad details. Hand-drawn maps which locate the histories accompany the texts.

‘Barcelona: A Narrative Atlas’, is presented as both a limited edition of hand-made books and an unlimited edition of free printable copies, available for download from Blaylock’s website. Local residents have translated the texts from the original English to Catalan and Spanish.

Blaylock hopes to pique interest in both local and foreign populations from all parts of the city. The project pays equal attention to Barcelona’s characteristically popular districts (Ciutat Vella, Gràcia) as well as newer or underrepresented ones (Nou Barris, Horta-Guinardó).

Miscelanea will host the first public presentation of ‘Barcelona: A Narrative Atlas’ on Sunday, March 20 at 7pm. The event features readings of the district texts by local residents in English, Catalan and Spanish. Following the readings, the artist invites the public to continue the cartographic endeavor by adding their own histories based on experience, research, rumor, conjecture, etcetera. American poet and Catalan/Spanish-speaker Ari Feld will moderate the discussion. Free photocopies of the texts and maps will be available. Copies of the limited edition book will be available for purchase in the Miscelanea shop.

After getting in so much practice making ketubot for Ketubah – family contracts, I decided to go traditional and start making them for weddings! Personalizing and crafting ketubot for couples is my way of manifesting the love I see between them as well as their hopes for their future.

Check out the brides and grooms with my hand-made-with-love ketubot!

The bride works in fashion, and wanted to the color scheme to be black, white and magenta. I based it on Barcelona modernist architecture because I wanted it to match her and her sense of style – gorgeous, flashy, yet elegant. I went all around the city sketching details in the stained-glass windows and decorated doorways.

For this ketubah, Rachel told me to do whatever I wanted. Because she is so natural and beautiful, I was inspired by nature. I stylized two trees intersecting and embellished the design with birds. The trees and nest are gold, and the leaves and birds iridescent.

This collective exhibit at the historic TeclaSala Art Museam was 2 years in the making. The thread of the show, which attracted as much criticism as it did praise, was interdisciplinary concepts and methods in art-making.

I showed the video short “Document” alongside the Ketubah with an Estranged Sibling that was the basis for its script. In the background you can also see Antonia del Rio’s mind-blowing “Cementiri de la Memoria” (“Memory Cemetery”), composed of one hundred newspaper niches. I am so fortunate to have worked with Karin Frutig, Laura Gamboa, Manuel García, Daniel Gasol, Lola Lasurt, Alejandro Martín, Elisa Murcia, Óscar Padilla, Zeyno Penkünlü, Elisabet Pizarro, Antonia del Río, Silvia Rodríguez and Sebastián Cabrera, and to also call them my friends.

This exhibit is the culmination of the project by the same name. As it deals with family relationships, I decided to display the work in a replica of a domestic space. In the entrance of La Capella, I converted an 81 square-foot, white, dry-wall cube into a family living room, complete with hardwood floors and a sofa. “Document” played on the TV and 5 ketubot representing different families’ stories hung on the surrounding walls.

The incredible Judith Joseph presented our collaboration on the work Shelter. Judith Joseph is a Chicago-based painter and ketubah artist whose work is like children’s storybook illustrations that have wandered off into an adult place. I contacted her when I was beginning my research and drawings for Ketubah – family contracts, and a friendship and professional collaboration followed.

Shelter was a multi-media, interactive sculpture that provided viewers with a safe haven to confront their fears and secrets. Viewers were invited to write down certain “prayers” and desires and leave the notes among lumps of coal in a pile, which acted as a domestic western wall. Check out Judith’s description of Shelter in the video below!
